She earned her M.Sc. in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Texas there before earning her PhD in the same field from the University of Colorado in 1988.

She joined Johnson Space Center after being chosen by NASA in 1994. She flew into space for the first time in 2007 as a mission specialist on Space Shuttle Columbia’s STS-87 mission.

In an explosion that occurred during Mission STS-107 in 2003 while she was on the space shuttle Columbia, she lost her life.
