SANNIHIT SAROVAR, Kurukshetra Overview

At a distance of three kilometres from Kurukshetra, the Sannihit Sarovar is said to be the permanent residence of Lord Vishnu.. If a person does Shradhs and bathes here during the solar eclipse, he will receive the reward of 1000 Ashwamedh sacrifices, according to mythology. It is believed that all of Tirtha’s convene here on Amavasya day.

Pilgrims flock to this sacred site during a solar eclipse. Purohits, or Pandas, as they are locally known, have been the record keepers of pilgrims from all over India for centuries, and visitors can learn about their ancestors from them.
Sikh Gurus have also made pilgrimages to this sacred spot.

History

According to popular belief, the sacred water of the Sarovar can be found there. Taking a bath in the tank’s waters on the night of Amavasya (the night of total darkness) or on the day of an eclipse bestows the same rewards as doing the Ashvamedha Yajna.

It is said that taking a dip in this sarovar will provide tranquilly to restless and troubled spirits. It’s a place where people come to pray and participate in a memorial service known as pind daan. The Kurukshetra, Haryana, Hindu genealogical registers are also preserved here. Dhruv Narayan, Laxmi Narayan and Goddess Durga are some of the smaller temples that can be found around the sarovar. Lord Vishnu is said to reside in the Sannihit Sarovar.

How to reach

By plane
The closest airports to Kurukshetra are in Delhi and Chandigarh, both of which have good road and rail connections. From the airport, taxis can be summoned as well. Kurukshetra is 160 kilometres away from Delhi, the capital city.

Through means of rail
It is located on the Delhi-Ambala railway line, popularly known as Kurukshetra Junction. Kurukshetra is easily accessible from all of India’s major cities and towns. Here, the Shatabdi Express arrives.

In a vehicle
Kurukshetra is connected to nearby cities like Delhi, Chandigarh, and other significant destinations by buses from Haryana Roadways and other neighbouring state corporations.
